Chinatown was called Kreta Ayer by the locals , it was a place where water was delivered in barrels on carts pulled by water buffalos back in the days.
Home to Chinese migrants from South China seeking job opportunities overseas it became the largest historic district in Singapore .
During our walking tour we will see where the rickshaw pullers used to live , the opium den and walk along Sago Lane known as the “Street of the Dead”.
We will also see the Lai Chun Yuen Theatre built in 1887 offering Cantonese opera performances twice daily catering to more than 800 spectators.
We will see beautiful wall murals depicting the heritage of Chinatown by Singaporean artist Yip Yew Chong who spent his childhood growing up in Chinatown.
Continue to the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple built in 2007 and cross over to Ann Siang Hill, a former nutmeg plantation where we will see various clan houses.
Our tour will end in Telok Ayer street ('' Big Bay" in Hokkian) where we will pay a visit to the Thian Hock Keng Temple. It was the first Chinese Temple built in 1838 by Hokkian migrants giving thanks to the Goddess of the Sea Mazu after their long journey from China to the shores of Singapore.
